Sunny Sunday in Edale (The Peaks)

I’ve neglected the Peak District for so many years living so close to it, but that’s all changing.

Transport: Train £7.25 return Manchester Picadilly – Edale
Route: Edale – Mam Tor – Edale
Food & Drink: The Rambler Inn

It’s sometimes – almost always – such a relief to get out to the countryside after a long week in the city. Edale really is spitting distance from Manchester City Centre too, the train station is central in the village and access to the walks is immediate. After a packed train journey where everyone from Manchester seemed to be heading for the countryside with their dogs, buggies, various children and bikes, we stepped off into glorious crisp sunshine. We decided to head for Mam Tor rather than Kinder Scout. This is a relatively easy (if occasionally steep) walk, which leads you up onto a ridge above the little village. The views are stunning and the route is well walked, you can extend it or keep it as short as you like. Once you’re at the top you have a view of the whole valley, the ridge extending for miles either side, and the Kinder Scout side of the valley, deep purple on the peaks at this time of year from the heather.

An added surprise at the top was the hordes of Paragliders drifting from the top of Mam Tor, while all their families perched on the side of the hill picnicking and watching. I am debating trying paragliding again, as I liked it so much last time and there’s something about the multi-coloured silks floating above me that just makes me very happy and peaceful.

Down in the village most, if not all, of the pubs are Dog Friendly. We tried The Rambler Inn, which has a gorgeous garden, especially in the sunshine, and a lovely interior too. You’re more than welcome here in you walking boots! I didn’t eat there but my friends had puddings – chocolate fudge cake, treacle pudding and sticky toffee pudding – which all looked amazing, and I would have happily tucked into their main menu too!

A sunny Sunday well spent I think; great walk, great dog, great pub.

P.s. Sorry for the lack of uploads… My laptop is broken, rather badly and it’s taking a while to fix.
